Freon leaks are one of the worst problems an airconditioning system can have when not taken care of it.  It causes huge heat loads on the compressor which is cooled by the freon coming back to it.  It can also damage the compressor if your system ice's up.  When you see ice that means liquid referigerant is going back to the compressor and if theres enough it can cause the valves to go out in some compressors.  We have special tools to locate those leaks. Step 1 is using an electronic leak detector, which usually locates the leak or at least gives an idea of what part of the system is leaking.  Step 2 is using soap bubbles to pin-point the exact spot of the leak.  Step 3 if you havent found exact spot of leak in a coil then it will need to be submerged in water, just like they do tires.  The older copper coils can be soddered and fixed.  The newer aluminum ones I have not found a good fix for, but they say there is an epoxy that works.  The Price to fix a leak like this can cost as much as $1000 or more if a coil needs replaced.

The following video I shot at a customers home where I fould and fixed a freon leak for them.  I did not get the repair on film, but with my torches I fixed the leak in about  minutes.
